“Feeling Some Kind of Way”: Music & Mental Health

Monthly Brown Bag Discussions sponsored by MALE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH (MBH) bring together a wide array of individuals from educators, clinicians, intellectuals, artists and authors, to discuss their work and a range of topics that are important to men and boys in the US and worldwide.

Join Urban One, Male Behavioral Health, Columbus, OH Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers, and Experts Discuss the role and impact of music on mental health!

Yaves Ellis– Yaves has shared platforms with former President Bill Clinton, worked alongside Jamie Fox, performed at the Nickelodeon complex in Los Angeles, CA, reached audiences all over the world with his music, Dr. Cornel West called him a “concentrated genius”, but his mother still calls him Yaves. A native of Columbus, OH; Yaves is also the youngest person to ever hold the title of Public Affairs Director in the Radio One conglomerate, which owns over 40 radio stations across the country. He currently host two radio shows, Any Given Sunday, and Eye On The Community, with commentary and analysis on issues related to politics, race, socio-economics, and popular culture the show has a diverse format that reaches a wide audience of over 200,000 listeners.

Dr. Akil Houston– Dr. Akil Houston is a cultural studies scholar who is multifaceted. He is a filmmaker, DJ, social critic, and hip-hop scholar. Houston specializes in Africana media studies. His scholarship and research is interdisciplinary. His research draws on the fields of Africology/African-American, Cinema, Cultural, and Gender Studies. The focus of his work relates to constructions of gender, race and class.

Dr. Tony Anderson– Dr. Tony Anderson is currently an Assistant Principal at the Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center an arts magnet high school in Columbus City Schools. Dr. Anderson received international acclaim for his work as the creator and founder of Bassline Entertainment, and he is currently the founder/director of The Paragon Project, a youth-led music group that creates and performs music that addresses social issues. The Paragon Project has released four albums. Their most recent composition, VOL. 4: ADD-A-LESSON is available on all major streaming platforms and features an animated video available on YouTube.
